Ubisoft’s iconic franchise, Assassin’s Creed, continues to shine in the gaming industry, with lifetime sales exceeding 200 million units since its inception in 2007. The series has evolved significantly over the years, transitioning from its initial focus on stealth-driven historical narratives to the expansive open-world RPG format seen in its latest installments. Ubisoft is gearing up for the release of the next title later this year and has also confirmed that several remakes of classic games from the franchise are in development.

Upcoming Remakes

In a recent interview, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot provided insights into the future of the Assassin’s Creed franchise and the studio’s forthcoming lineup of games. He revealed that fans can look forward to several remakes, though specifics regarding the titles and release schedules remain undisclosed.

“Firstly, players can be excited about some remakes, which will allow us to revisit some of the games we’ve created in the past and modernize them; there are worlds in some of our older Assassin’s Creed games that are still extremely rich,” stated Guillemot.

He emphasized Ubisoft’s intention to diversify the Assassin’s Creed lineup, ensuring that each new entry provides a distinct experience. For example, last year’s Assassin’s Creed Mirage returned to the series’ roots with a more streamlined, stealth-oriented gameplay. In contrast, the upcoming Assassin’s Creed Shadows will continue the extensive open-world RPG approach that has characterized recent titles like Assassin’s Creed Valhalla.

“The goal is to have Assassin’s Creed games come out more regularly, but not for it to be the same experience every year,” he explained. Guillemot also touched on Assassin’s Creed Hexe, which was announced at Ubisoft Forward in 2022. This title will delve into the 16th-century witch trials and promises a significantly different narrative and gameplay experience compared to Assassin’s Creed Shadows. “We’re going to surprise people, I think,” he remarked.

Details on Assassin’s Creed Shadows

Guillemot shared some highlights about the upcoming Assassin’s Creed Shadows, an open-world action-adventure game set in Japan scheduled for release on November 15 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series S/X. He discussed the innovative dynamic weather system, which aims to enhance gameplay rather than merely serving as a visual feature.

“In Assassin’s Creed Shadows, for example, we have a weather system that will affect its gameplay; ponds that were once swimmable might freeze, for instance,” he mentioned. “Visually, we’re also seeing a big step forward,” he added.

The CEO also reiterated Ubisoft’s commitment to developing live service titles and highlighted the prospective applications of generative artificial intelligence (AI) in the video game development process.
