Twitter has implemented a new requirement for users to create an account on the platform in order to view tweets, a decision that Elon Musk referred to as a “temporary emergency measure” on Friday.
Individuals attempting to access content on Twitter will now need to either sign up for a new account or log into an existing one in order to see tweets from their preferred users.
“The excessive data scraping was impacting the experience for regular users,” Musk stated in a tweet, addressing the issue of data being collected without proper authorization.
According to Musk, an extensive number of organizations have been aggressively harvesting data from Twitter, which has been detrimental to user experience on the platform.
The Twitter owner has previously voiced concerns regarding AI companies, such as OpenAI, utilizing Twitter’s data to train their language models without consent.
“We are prepared to take legal action against those who have unlawfully taken our data and are eager to confront them in court, though that may take about 2 to 3 years,” he remarked.
In May, Musk’s attorney, Alex Spiro, reached out to Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, requesting an audit of the tech giant’s use of Twitter’s content, alleging violations of their data usage agreement.
In light of these challenges, Twitter has rolled out various strategies aimed at luring back advertisers who departed under Musk’s leadership and is working to boost subscription income by integrating verification check marks into the Twitter Blue service.
This month, the company also unveiled plans to emphasize video content, creator collaborations, and commerce ventures in an effort to enhance its business operations beyond just digital advertising.
Furthermore, Twitter has started charging users for access to its application programming interface (API), which is utilized by third-party applications and researchers.
