On Monday, Truecaller unveiled a feature designed to help users sift through an inbox increasingly cluttered with spam messages. Known as Message IDs, this innovation utilizes artificial intelligence (AI) to scan SMS inboxes and identify important messages, such as one-time passwords (OTPs), delivery notifications, and ticket booking statuses, from verified businesses. Messages that meet these criteria display a green check mark within the inbox, according to Truecaller.

The Message IDs feature has been rolled out in India and 30 additional countries. It employs AI and large language models (LLMs) to perform on-device scanning of SMS inboxes, enhancing the identification process for essential business communications. Truecaller underscores that user data remains protected due to the on-device processing involved.
This new feature is accessible to all users, not just Premium subscribers, and supports a variety of languages, including English, Hindi, Swahili, and Spanish.
To provide real-time notifications for critical alerts, the feature requires users to grant the “Read SMS” and “Display Over Other Apps” permissions. Truecaller has implemented Green Message IDs to distinguish legitimate messages from potential scams or spoofed texts. The green check mark signifies that the received message is from a verified business, covering communications like bank alerts, OTPs, delivery updates, flight itineraries, and payment reminders.
Moreover, Truecaller is capable of identifying and emphasizing other significant messages, even those outside typical SMS classifications. Message IDs also generate AI-powered summaries of key message details, allowing users to quickly grasp important information and take action. These summaries appear above the original message content and are marked with the “AI generated summary” tag.
The launch of AI-driven Message IDs complements Truecaller’s recent enhancement of API support for iPhones, which facilitates functions like real-time caller identification and automated spam call blocking. This update aligns the iOS version of the application with its Android counterpart, which has offered similar features for several years.
