Truecaller is set to expand its caller identification service to include WhatsApp and other messaging platforms, allowing users to identify possible spam calls made via the Internet. The announcement was made by the company to Reuters on Monday.
Currently in beta testing, the new feature is scheduled for a global rollout later this month, according to Truecaller Chief Executive Alan Mamedi.
Spam and telemarketing calls have increased significantly in various countries, notably India, where users reportedly receive an average of 17 spam calls each month based on a 2021 Truecaller report.
In a proactive move, India’s telecom regulator instructed providers such as Jio and Airtel in February to employ artificial intelligence filters to block telemarketing calls. Truecaller has indicated that it is in discussions with telecom companies to facilitate this blocking mechanism.
WhatsApp holds the title of the most widely used messaging app in India, and the company has emphasized its use of spam detection technologies to identify and take action against accounts exhibiting unusual behavior. Users are also able to block and report accounts that are causing issues.
India represents Truecaller’s largest user base with 250 million users out of a global total of 350 million. The company generates revenue through advertising, subscription services, and verified business listings.
