Disney has unveiled the initial trailer for Tron: Ares, a long-anticipated sequel to Tron: Legacy. The minute-and-a-half trailer, while not disclosing much of the plot, showcases the film’s distinct visuals, characterized by dark and atmospheric settings interspersed with the series’ iconic light trails.
Opening in a nighttime cityscape, the trailer features Jared Leto portraying Ares, a Program materialized into the physical realm, as he evades police on a light cycle, severing one officer in half with his light trail. The visuals then shift to reveal a massive airship looming over the real world, illuminated by red lights along its exterior. Following scenes depict a mix of terrified onlookers, aerial battles between human aircraft, and digital fighters from the Tron universe, along with what seems to be a scene of Ares receiving his tangible form.
The intense imagery is paired with a soundtrack provided by Nine Inch Nails, setting a fittingly powerful tone. The trailer culminates in a voiceover from Jeff Bridges, who reprises his role as Kevin Flynn, asserting, “Ready? There’s no going back.” The film is scheduled for release in theaters on October 10th.
In a release accompanying the trailer, Disney shared the above poster, which was also featured in an email to Technology News. During a CinemaCon presentation on Thursday, Leto introduced his character as “a highly advanced program” embarking on a “do-or-die mission” in the real world, and teased that the film will “hit you right in the grid … wherever that is.” Alongside Leto and Bridges, Tron: Ares is directed by Joachim Rønning and features a star-studded cast that includes Gillian Anderson, Greta Lee, Evan Peters, Hasan Minhaj, Jodie Turner-Smith, Arturo Castro, and Cameron Monaghan.
