The long-cherished Top Spin tennis video game series is set to make a comeback after more than ten years without a new installment. Publisher 2K announced on Tuesday that TopSpin 2K25 will be launched soon, introducing the news alongside a teaser trailer. This revival comes at the perfect time during the Australian Open, tapping into the heightened interest in tennis generated by the tournament, the first Grand Slam event of the calendar year. The latest addition to the franchise will be developed by Hangar 13, the studio known for its work on the recent Mafia titles. Although 2K has not provided a specific release date or timeframe, the game’s branding suggests a launch may happen later this year, aligning with the traditional schedule of other 2K sports offerings.
The teaser trailer for TopSpin 2K25 features a fully licensed Australian Open experience, showcasing gameplay snippets and cinematics rendered with the game’s own engine. While the trailer does not include any identified professional players, fans can reasonably anticipate that the final version will feature some of the sport’s biggest names. In the trailer description, 2K declared, “TopSpin 2K25 is the next must-play sports game from 2K that fully immerses fans into the world of tennis,” with an assurance that more information regarding the release date and game features will be provided soon.
The announcement of TopSpin 2K25 comes nearly 13 years after the debut of the last installment, Top Spin 4, which was developed by 2K Czech and released in March 2011 for PlayStation 3, Wii, and Xbox 360 platforms.
It is noteworthy that 2K Czech, which had previously developed earlier Mafia titles, merged with Hangar 13 in 2017. The studio is also working on a new, untitled Mafia sequel, often referred to as Mafia 4. In 2022, Hangar 13 mentioned that this upcoming Mafia game is “a few years away” from being officially announced.
While 2K has yet to disclose the platforms for TopSpin 2K25, it is expected to be released on both current-generation and previous-generation consoles. Although the Top Spin franchise is making a long-awaited return, it is worth mentioning that the tennis gaming market has not been inactive. Australian developer Big Ant Studios launched two tennis games, AO Tennis 2 and Tennis World Tour 2, in 2022, both of which were published by Nacon.
