Other notable mentions include a dark twist on the classic Pinocchio story, new adventures featuring Marvel’s iconic web-slingers, and Link’s time-hopping quest to save Hyrule.
Below are Gadgets 360’s selections for the best games of the year, available on various platforms including PC, Android, iOS, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series S/X. (Listed in no particular order)
Baldur’s Gate III
This title is a masterful realization of intricate Dungeons & Dragons gameplay mechanics, immersing players in the rich lore of the Forgotten Realms. It transforms interactions with devils, deities, and other supernatural beings into thrilling experiences. Players still hesitant about its origins in tabletop gaming might reconsider after witnessing its extensive collection of awards. Baldur’s Gate III heralds a new era of player-driven storytelling; every choice has a ripple effect on the game world, whether it’s through major plot points, outrageous dialogue, or romantic endeavors with a diverse group of companions. Forge unlikely alliances, betray goblins, or entice a vampire spawn into revealing their tragic history — the possibilities are boundless.
The stellar voice acting and deep character backstories ensure players remain invested in the fates of their allies, each with their own unique challenges. The game’s reliance on polyhedral dice rolls adds an element of unpredictability, embracing the exhilarating tension commonly associated with D&D. Players can opt for creative tactics, whether that involves stealthy maneuvers or all-out assaults. The freedom to navigate situations however one chooses adds an exhilarating layer to the gameplay experience.
Apologies for the enthusiasm regarding this title, but it truly deserves the accolades it has garnered! Along with its technical accomplishments, the unforgettable moments created through wild choices and unexpected deaths, all narrated by the ever-present dungeon master, will leave a lasting impact on any player. Larian Studios deserves commendation for its continued support and engagement with the community, as seen in their willingness to incorporate player feedback, like the option to change character appearances, into future updates. This kind of responsiveness is rare in the industry. — Rahul Chettiyar

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
Insomniac Games continues to refine its formula for creating high-quality blockbuster titles that excel not only in visual fidelity but also in storytelling. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 embodies this approach. It captures the essence of a Spider-Man narrative while delivering a polished gameplay experience. Building upon the strengths of its predecessors, this sequel may not reinvent the wheel, but it enhances the open-world design to keep players engaged without feeling like they are merely ticking off tasks.
The focus on the journeys of both Peter Parker and Miles Morales, along with supporting characters such as MJ and Mr. Negative, adds depth to the storytelling. The villains featured in this installment, including Lizard, Kraven, and Venom, are well-developed and menacing. The expanded New York City map offers a beautifully crafted playground for players to explore, enticing them to return even after completing the game.
While the combat system remains enjoyable and dynamic, it could benefit from deeper mechanics. A more intricate fighting system would have elevated the experience, as some elements felt predictable, particularly in the narrative’s conclusion. Nevertheless, the overall excellence of the game overshadows these minor issues. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 serves as a compelling cinematic experience; its engaging story and exhilarating set-pieces resemble watching a well-crafted Marvel film that players can enjoy repeatedly. — Manas Mitul

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom
Amid a year filled with exceptional gaming experiences, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom stands out by breaking traditional genre boundaries and crafting something entirely unique. At its core, it is an open-world action-adventure game prioritizing exploration and player freedom. However, delving deeper reveals an innovative experience unlike anything else in the gaming landscape.
The game begins by discarding the mechanical frameworks established in its predecessor, Breath of the Wild, which can initially feel disorienting. Still, it gradually introduces players to groundbreaking gameplay options, most notably through the new Ultrahand ability that allows for creative construction within the game. Early applications of this skill enable players to traverse obstacles, but as mastery grows, the possibilities expand exponentially, resembling a virtual sandbox that invites unbounded creativity.
No other title has offered the same level of surprise and inventiveness, consistently empowering players to explore imaginative solutions without overwhelming them. With an expansive world that encourages experimentation, Tears of the Kingdom also excels in its atmospheric music and stunning visuals, crafting an emotional journey that resonates with players long after they put down the controller. — Manas Mitul

Lies of P
Despite some detractors labeling it a mere imitation, Lies of P establishes its distinct identity in a crowded genre of Soulsborne-inspired titles. Drawing inspiration from Bloodborne, it creates a gothic atmosphere filled with blood-soaked cobblestone streets, ornate streetlamps, and countless bodies. However, it introduces unique mechanics that enhance the hack-and-slash gameplay experience. Players take on the role of Pinocchio, the storied puppet boy, navigating a world plagued by a disease causing machines to run amok.
As players traverse the interconnected pathways of Krat, reminiscent of the level design in Dark Souls, the game offers an immersive experience. Along the journey, players encounter quirky NPCs who share tales of puppet insurrections against their makers, adding depth to the narrative. The hallmark of a quality Souls-like lies in its challenging boss fights, and Lies of P does not disappoint, demanding players master their parry timing and memorize attack patterns. While this may prove frustrating for newcomers, the option to summon assistance and access a creative arsenal of weapons balances the challenge effectively.
Quality-of-life enhancements, such as losing souls at the boss arena instead of arbitrarily, allow for a smoother experience, while the freedom to dress your character without impacting stats adds a casual charm. Neowiz has truly crafted a compelling adventure with Lies of P, which feels refreshing in an increasingly formulaic genre. — Rahul Chettiyar

Dredge
Dredge may appear to be a simple fishing game, but scratching the surface reveals a deeper narrative exploring themes of isolation and existential dread. Players assume the role of a fisherman arriving in a small, coastal town, where they receive guidance from locals and begin to catch various fish. The game operates on a day-night cycle, encouraging players to fish during the day while revealing mysterious and challenging elements at night, from bizarre sea creatures to hallucinations.
As players progress, catching rarer fish leads to upgrades for their boat and gear, enhancing their fishing experience. With limited storage and a range of potential side quests, players uncover the stories of the town’s inhabitants while navigating the mysteries of the sea, resulting in a richly atmospheric adventure.
Dredge became my go-to game for unwinding on the Nintendo Switch, expertly blending quiet horror with curious exploration. Each fishing expedition promised surprises, with the final return to shore invoking a sense of completion and tranquility reminiscent of a satisfying day well spent. — Manas Mitul

Dave the Diver
Encountering a charming roguelite focused on ocean exploration and fishing was an unexpected delight this year. Dave the Diver combines the excitement of daytime spearfishing with nighttime sushi restaurant management, all presented in an adorable pixelated art style that captivates players. To prevent monotony, developer Mintrocket continually introduces new mechanics and character arcs, ensuring growth without overwhelming players.
During the day, players catch fish while encountering quirky characters who contribute to the story. As they upgrade their gear, they face off against larger sea creatures. Meanwhile, managing the sushi restaurant provides another layer of complexity, with customers demanding quick service and staff to manage. Smaller, interacting quests develop into compelling side stories that keep gameplay dynamic and engaging. I found myself eagerly returning for just one more day of fishing, enthralled until Baldur’s Gate 3 launched. — Rahul Chettiyar

Exploring the eerie, unsettling themes of a David Cronenberg narrative underwater proves to be a chilling experience. For Charlie and Mac, a sea-faring couple, the discovery of a sinister laboratory ignites curiosity mingled with dread as they encounter grotesque experiments. Known for its narrative depth, isometric gameplay reminiscent of the acclaimed Disco Elysium captivates players by encouraging thorough exploration and environmental storytelling.
The game effectively communicates horror through immersive mechanics, revealing gripping narratives and grotesque imagery. With skillful design, players navigate through puzzles that demand strategic collaboration between characters, presenting a rich environment filled with lore. Collecting datapads unravels richer side-stories that tie into the overarching horror theme. Although voice narration would enhance the experience, the overall craftsmanship behind Stasis: Bone Totem makes it a must-play for fans of indie gaming. — Rahul Chettiyar
