In a bid to enhance user interaction, TikTok is set to roll out new features in its direct messaging system, allowing users to send voice messages and images. This development comes shortly after Spotify indicated its desire to be the go-to social platform. According to a statement provided to TechCrunch, the new options should be accessible to all users within the coming weeks.
(However, it is important to note that these features will not be available for users who do not have access to direct messaging. TikTok representative JaShel Jones confirmed to Technology News that “Direct Messaging is only available to accounts 16 years and older, thus limiting these features accordingly.”)
Testing the new features, many users can confirm that both voice messages and images can now be shared, in addition to the existing option to send videos lasting up to one minute. A caution: when recording a voice message by holding down the microphone button, releasing it will automatically send the recording. Users must slide their fingers up or left to cancel if needed.
In terms of limitations, users can send a maximum of nine images or videos in a single message, and both voice memos and videos are capped at one minute in duration.
Update, August 29th: Included clarifications from TikTok regarding the eligibility for direct messaging.
