V. Pappas, the Chief Operating Officer of TikTok, is resigning after a five-year tenure with the short-video platform owned by ByteDance of China, according to an internal email reviewed by Reuters on Thursday.
In their communication to staff, Pappas noted that they will take on an advisory role during the transition period.
“After achieving significant milestones at TikTok, I believe it is the right moment to pursue my entrepreneurial interests,” Pappas, who identifies with they/them pronouns, stated.
On the same day, ByteDance’s CEO Shou Chew informed employees via a memo, also shared with Reuters, that Zenia Mucha, who spent two decades at Walt Disney, will be joining TikTok as the chief brand and communications officer.
Adam Presser, who currently serves as TikTok’s chief of staff, will be promoted to oversee operations, which includes content management, user operations, and distribution, according to Chew’s announcement.
The company continues to encounter global scrutiny due to security concerns related to its Chinese ownership.
Last week, U.S. lawmakers unveiled new legislation aimed at safeguarding Americans’ user data from potential misuse by foreign adversaries.
In a notable legal challenge, TikTok filed a lawsuit against the state of Montana last month after it became the first state to implement a comprehensive ban on the app.
