Threads is in the process of trialing a new functionality that would enable users to create posts that vanish after a designated period. According to reports, these ephemeral posts can remain visible for up to 24 hours. Additionally, replies made on these posts will also be automatically deleted once the original content expires. Currently, the feature is being tested with a select group of users, and there is no information available regarding its potential rollout to a broader audience.

Threads Testing Temporary Post Feature

Meta has confirmed to TechCrunch that it is experimenting with this temporary posting feature in a limited capacity. This announcement follows an internal prototype that Threads mentioned to the publication back in June.

Developer Alessandro Paluzzi demonstrated the new feature by making a temporary post last Friday. A screenshot included in the report shows a countdown timer running down to zero, at which point the post and all associated replies disappear.

Although the feature’s banner did not explicitly mention it, reports indicate that any quoted posts—essentially reposts with added commentary—will also vanish once the original post’s timer expires. The company has been examining this temporary post option for several months.

Importantly, these temporary posts will not appear on Threads’ fediverse network. This means that if a user decides to switch to Mastodon, their temporary posts will not transfer, as Threads cannot remove content from an external platform.

While the application of such a feature may be specific, it can serve to facilitate off-topic discussions or posts relevant only for a limited time. For example, it could be particularly useful for users providing live commentary during significant events hosted by companies like Apple or Samsung.

At this time, it remains uncertain when this feature will be made available to all users. There is also no clarity on whether individuals can select a specific duration under 24 hours for automatic post deletion. These specifics are likely to be clarified once the feature is launched to the public.
