Threads has begun the global rollout of its new Tags feature, aimed at enhancing user experience on the platform. Developed by Meta, Threads was launched earlier this year to provide competition to Elon Musk’s X. Several weeks ago, Meta revealed that it was testing tags, commonly referred to as hashtags, within Threads posts. This feature, widely embraced across various social media platforms, including its rival X, has seen significant user engagement over the years. However, Threads’ implementation of tags includes distinct features and limitations.

Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, announced in a Threads post that users can now tag topics in their posts. He clarified that this feature is rolling out to all users worldwide. The tags are designed to help users organize their content, making it more discoverable and engaging. While the concept is reminiscent of traditional hashtags seen on other platforms, the Tags feature on Threads introduces noticeable modifications and specific functionalities.

In his post, Mosseri elaborated on the new system, explaining that the “#” symbol will be omitted in Threads tags. Users are allowed to include multi-word tags, with spaces permitted between words, although only a single tag per post is permitted. According to Mosseri, this revision aims to foster community-focused discussions rather than “engagement hacking.”

To create a tag on Threads, users can press the “#” key on their keyboard or utilize the dedicated # button in the post composer. A dropdown will display a list of existing topics, allowing users to select from them or create a new topic entirely. Special characters and spaces may be included in the tags.

Since the “#” symbol is not displayed within posts, Tags on Threads appear in blue and function like hyperlinks. Users can click on these tags to follow and engage in related conversations. Additionally, an Instagram Product Designer mentioned that users can incorporate emojis into their tags as well.
