On Friday, Threads introduced a new feature designed to enhance users’ understanding of their posts and profiles. Known as Account Status, this functionality, previously exclusive to Instagram, has now been made available on the Meta-owned microblogging platform. With this addition, users can monitor instances when their Threads posts are either removed or demoted in accordance with community standards. If individuals believe that a post has been unjustly removed or demoted, Threads also offers a reporting option.
Account Status on Threads
The Account Status feature was elaborated upon in a post by Threads, aiming to provide users with clearer insights about their posts and profile status directly within the app. Users can view actions related to their posts or replies that may violate the platform’s community standards. To access their account status, users can navigate to Settings > Account > Account status.
According to information provided by the platform, there are four potential actions that can be applied to any post or profile: removal of content, items that cannot be recommended, content that is lowered in visibility within feeds, and restrictions on certain features. This suggests that Threads might not solely remove posts, but could also limit their recommendation, reduce a post’s or profile’s visibility, and restrict available features for users.
If a user believes that the moderation process has erred, they have the opportunity to request a review of the specific post or profile. The user will receive a notification once the submitted report has been evaluated. According to the company, its community standards apply universally, covering a wide array of content types, including material produced with artificial intelligence (AI).
While the platform emphasizes the importance of self-expression, it also acknowledges instances where it may curtail expression to uphold principles such as authenticity, dignity, privacy, and safety. Content that typically contravenes community standards may still be permitted if it serves the public interest or bears newsworthy significance. This evaluation balances the content’s value against potential harm, adhering to international human rights standards. Additionally, there are circumstances where content featuring ambiguous or implicit language may be removed if further context is provided.
