Threads has introduced direct messaging (DM) functionality, enabling users to engage in private one-on-one conversations without leaving the platform. According to Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, this addition has been one of the most frequently requested features since Threads’ inception in 2023. The update comes with various enhancements, including messaging controls, inbox filtering, and options for group messaging. Additionally, Meta’s microblogging service has launched Threads Highlighter, designed to showcase trending topics.
Sending DMs on Threads
Since its debut in 2023, Threads positioned itself as a competitor to X (formerly known as Twitter), particularly after Elon Musk’s acquisition of the latter. Initially, Threads lacked direct messaging capabilities, but that limitation has now been lifted. According to Meta’s recent blog announcement, one-on-one messaging is now available for users on the platform, although there are some restrictions. The testing phase for this feature began last month and has since been broadened for all users.
The direct messaging option is currently accessible only to Threads followers or mutual friends from Instagram who are 18 years or older. These messages are safeguarded under Meta’s established privacy protocols, account security measures, and overall safety framework. The company plans to expand the DM feature in the near future, starting with enhanced message controls.
This control feature allows users to manage who can send them messages. Users can choose to receive DMs from individuals who do not follow them on Threads or Instagram, with such requests being organized in a separate message requests folder. Furthermore, the new group messaging option will enable multiple users to participate in conversations at once, according to Meta’s description.
The inbox features, aptly named, will allow users to apply filters to their inbox, making it easier to locate specific messages based on various parameters.
According to the company, DMs will be accessible through an envelope icon located in the bottom tray of the app. Screenshots suggest that the user interface will closely resemble the DMs layout seen on Instagram.
In addition to the DM feature, Threads is rolling out Threads Highlighter, a new UI element intended to showcase “unique perspectives that lead to thoughtful conversations,” as outlined by Meta. This feature will be strategically placed throughout the app to facilitate content discovery. Additionally, Threads will utilize Highlighter to indicate trending topics, with plans for its broader implementation in the future.
