Meta’s microblogging platform, Threads, which competes with X (formerly known as Twitter), has revealed modifications to its algorithm aimed at enhancing user engagement. Starting Thursday, the platform will reduce the number of recommended posts, which are typically from accounts that users do not follow. While Threads previously allowed users to view a feed containing solely posts from their followed accounts, the algorithm-driven feed appears when users first launch the app.

Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, disclosed details of the algorithm update via a post on Threads. He stated, “We are rebalancing ranking to prioritise content from people you follow, which will mean less recommended content from accounts you don’t follow and more posts from the accounts you do starting today.”

The adjustment will notably affect content creators who depend on the algorithm to reach new audiences. With the latest changes, these creators’ existing followers will see more of their posts. Mosseri added, “For you creators out there, you should see unconnected reach go down and connected reach go up. This is definitely a work in progress – balancing the ability to reach followers and overall engagement is tricky – thanks for your patience and keep the feedback coming.”

According to reports from Gadgets 360 staff, Threads had already been displaying fewer recommended posts from unfamiliar accounts on its mobile applications. Users seeking to view a feed comprised solely of posts from their followed accounts can easily switch by pulling down on the feed and tapping the Following tab.

While Mosseri did not elaborate on the motivations behind the algorithmic change, it is important to note that Threads, which boasted over 175 million monthly active users as of July, faces challenges similar to those of X, particularly concerning bots. It is commonplace for users to encounter bots reposting widely circulated content on platforms like Threads and Twitter, especially posts that are likely to attract high engagement. With this algorithm update, users can expect a decrease in posts from accounts they do not follow.
