Transport for London (TfL) has launched a new campaign aiming to curb the disruptive behavior of passengers playing loud music or engaging in phone conversations on public transport. Following the successful implementation of 4G and 5G services in the Underground, TfL is now encouraging the use of headphones while enjoying content on mobile devices to foster a more pleasant travel environment.
The “Headphones On” campaign is highlighted on new posters urging riders to respect fellow commuters by avoiding loud sounds. These posters have initially been placed along the Elizabeth rail line and will gradually be introduced to services including buses, the Docklands Light Railway, London Overground, London Underground, and London Trams starting in October.
With enhanced mobile coverage now available in many Underground areas, TfL aims to address the growing issue of passengers neglecting to use headphones while streaming content, which has been a source of irritation for many commuters. A recent survey conducted by TfL revealed that 70 percent of 1,000 respondents expressed frustration over the disruptions caused by loud music and phone calls.
Seb Dance, London’s deputy transport mayor, pointed out that while the majority of passengers use headphones, the few who do not can significantly disrupt fellow travelers. “This campaign serves as a reminder for Londoners to be considerate of others during their journeys,” he stated.
The initiative builds on the “#TravelKind campaign” initiated by TfL in 2017, which promotes courteous behavior among all users of public transportation.
