Starfield, the highly anticipated sci-fi RPG developed by Bethesda, is expected to make its debut on the PlayStation 5 in 2026. This launch is likely to align with the introduction of the game’s second expansion. Speculations regarding a PlayStation version have circulated since Microsoft began allowing some of its titles on competing platforms.
PS5 Launch Planned for 2026
A report from MP1st indicates that Microsoft plans to release Starfield on the PS5 in the spring of 2026, specifically between mid-March and mid-June. Sources within the industry suggest that the launch has been delayed from an initial target of 2025 due to disappointing sales figures for its first expansion, Shattered Space.
In tandem with the PS5 release, the technology giant aims to debut the second expansion and include various updates designed to enhance user experience. However, current plans do not include an official announcement for the PS5 version, with the report stating that no updates will be provided during the upcoming Gamescom event.
Microsoft’s Multiplatform Strategy
Phil Spencer, the CEO of Microsoft Gaming, has not dismissed the possibility of Starfield appearing on rival consoles like the PS5. In previous interviews, he emphasized the company’s strategy of releasing games across multiple platforms. When probed about Starfield’s exclusivity, Spencer indicated that the company sees value in making titles accessible to a wider audience. “There’s no reason for me to put a ring fence around any game and say ‘this game will not go to a place where it will find players,’” he stated.
Since Microsoft’s announcement that it would launch a portion of its first-party games on the PS5, the company has experienced positive results. For example, Playground Games’ Forza Horizon 5 transitioned from being an Xbox and PC exclusive to becoming the top-selling title on PS5 shortly after its release in April 2025. Similarly, Bethesda’s remastered version of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion also emerged as one of the bestsellers on the PlayStation Store during the same period.
Additional Xbox titles are slated for release on the PS5 this year, including Gears of War: Reloaded, which is set to launch on multiple platforms, including PS5 and PC, on August 26, 2025. Prior to that, an enhanced version of Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 is expected to be available on the PS5 starting August 12.
Furthermore, reports suggest that significant upcoming titles such as Gears of War: E-Day, the next installment in the Gears of War franchise, and State of Decay 3 may also be launched on the PS5 next year.
Starfield debuted on PC and the Xbox Series S/X on September 6, 2023, with its first expansion, Shattered Space, arriving a year later.
