Stig Asmussen, the director of the Star Wars Jedi series, is embarking on a new venture in the gaming world with a forthcoming Dungeons & Dragons video game. His newly established studio, Giant Skull, has secured a partnership with Wizards of the Coast, the company that holds the rights to the beloved Dungeons & Dragons franchise. The game, whose title has not yet been disclosed, is currently being developed for both PC and console platforms.
Announcement of a New Dungeons & Dragons Game
Wizards of the Coast, a subsidiary of Hasbro, revealed the exclusive publishing agreement with Giant Skull on Monday. John Hight, the president of Wizards of the Coast and Digital Gaming at Hasbro, stated that Giant Skull is the “perfect fit” to create the new Dungeons & Dragons experience. Asmussen founded the triple-A studio in 2024 after resigning from his role at EA and Respawn Entertainment in 2023.
“Our talented and experienced team at Giant Skull is built on creativity and curiosity,” Asmussen remarked in a statement. “Our mission is to develop a rich new Dungeons & Dragons universe infused with immersive storytelling, engaging combat, and thrilling traversal that players can fully embrace.”
Additional information regarding the upcoming Dungeons & Dragons game will be announced in due course, according to Hasbro.
About Asmussen and Giant Skull
Founded in Los Angeles, Giant Skull was introduced last year as a triple-A studio dedicated to producing “gameplay-driven, story-immersed action-adventure games.” Asmussen established the studio after leaving EA in 2023, where he was pivotal in the development of the Star Wars Jedi titles at Respawn Entertainment.
Asmussen directed both Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, and a third installment in the Jedi series is currently in the works at Respawn. Prior to his role at EA, he contributed to the original God of War trilogy at Sony’s Santa Monica Studio, where he served as the game director for God of War 3.
“Giant Skull has an elite team, all of whom will be instrumental in shaping this new single-player focused action adventure, utilizing Unreal Engine 5 from the ground-up,” the announcement from Hasbro noted.
Wizards of the Coast is developing several other games based on its intellectual properties, including another Dungeons & Dragons action-adventure title that is now in full production at the Montreal-based studio Invoke. The publisher recently achieved remarkable success with Larian Studio’s Baldur’s Gate 3, a turn-based fantasy RPG rooted in Dungeons & Dragons lore. This acclaimed game has sold over 15 million copies and garnered numerous awards, including Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2023.
