The Square Handheld is officially launched today at a price point of $399. This versatile device streamlines payment processing by accepting traditional card transactions alongside tap-to-pay options, and it facilitates product scanning and inventory management, all in one compact unit. This new technology is poised to enhance tap-to-pay capabilities in various business environments and eateries where Square’s established systems are already in use.
At a lightweight 11 ounces (approximately 311 grams) and with a thickness of less than one inch, Square touts this device as among the thinnest and lightest handheld point-of-sale systems available. Its design makes it more portable than Square’s wedge-shaped Terminal POS, adding competitive pressure to products like Clover’s $749 Flex system.
The Square Handheld features a 6.2-inch touchscreen that is both splash and dust resistant, a built-in barcode scanner, and a 16-megapixel camera. According to Square, this device is designed to carry enough battery power to last an entire day of business operations. Additionally, Belkin is providing protective cases, starting at $39, that can be customized to align with a company’s brand and to offer enhanced durability.
In addition to the Handheld’s release, Square has introduced a revamped POS app that grants access to seven customizable modes tailored for specific industries, including Quick Service, Bar, and Retail modes.
