More than a decade ago, a member of the reclusive DoomWorld forum, known by the pseudonym Okuplok, introduced what he termed “a slaughter map” for Doom 2. This level, featuring an overwhelming 23,211 enemies within narrow corridors, quickly earned a reputation among players on DoomWorld as one of the most challenging maps ever created.

The level’s daunting nature did not deter streamer Coincident, who has been actively attempting to conquer the Okuplok slaughter map for an extended period. Over the past weekend, Coincident made history as the first player to eliminate every enemy and finish the map in a single continuous segment, achieving this feat during a livestreamed marathon that lasted just over six hours.

A long time coming

It’s important to note that this isn’t the first occasion the Okuplok slaughter map has been completed. In 2023, Coincident managed to accomplish the task in a single segment while playing on the significantly easier “I’m too young to die” difficulty, which reduces damage dealt and increases ammunition availability. At that time, Coincident estimated an Ultra Violence run of the same map would be approximately “eight times more difficult,” largely due to the potential for random damage to end a run with just one mistake.

Tool-assisted speedruns indicated that a human player could theoretically complete an Ultra Violence run of the Okuplok map in under two hours, provided they executed every move perfectly. However, real players had only achieved success through multi-segment runs, using save states to alleviate the pressure of continuous play. Coincident himself previously completed an Ultra Violence run in two separate segments, an endeavor that required 56 attempts and what he described as “countless hours of practice.”

In preparation for his monumental single-segment completion, Coincident produced a series of strategy videos that elucidate the map’s considerable challenges, even in its initial sections. These videos detail the “scientific approach” he employed, focusing on movement tactics that leverage scarce cover and maintaining motion to prioritize both survival and resource management.

In these video descriptions, Coincident elaborated on why Okuplok’s level had often been dismissed as “impossible to beat in one segment” on Ultra Violence difficulty. He highlighted that despite having a well-structured strategy, “some of the later fights are a pure RNG grind.” He further reflected on the sheer frustration of repeatedly losing runs that had taken five hours or longer, especially towards the end of the map.

Coincident’s strategy videos demonstrate the difficulty of even the “easy” parts of the slaughter map.

Coincident described the map’s fluctuating difficulty during fights as “extremely frustrating,” especially when players face challenging encounters after breezing through extended stretches of easier gameplay. He noted that many players might not attempt a single-segment Ultra Violence run due to this disparity, suggesting that the mental toll could deter such efforts.

“It’s over!”

Nevertheless, Coincident took on the challenge he once thought impossible. His intense six-hour marathon, while not the most entertaining to watch during certain stretches, featured frenetic moments of combat interspersed with lengthy periods of evasion. The streamer often employed circle-strafing techniques to allow enemies to damage one another, conserving precious ammunition. He also strategically dealt with enemies one at a time in confined spaces to enhance his safety.

Even for those who may not be inclined to watch the entire six-hour run, highlights from the stream showcase Coincident’s precise dodging in chaotic scenarios filled with projectiles and countless defeated foes. The tension peaked towards the conclusion, with Coincident’s increasingly heavy breathing culminating in a climactic finish as he dispatched the final enemy with a well-aimed rocket just before reaching the exit panel.

“Yes! Fuck yes!” Coincident exclaimed triumphantly at the culmination of his run. “Okuplok is done! Done, done, done, done, done! … Oh my god, what a ride, this was quite the ride… It’s done, I don’t have to run this again! It’s over!”
