Sony is reportedly making strides toward a new platform dedicated to free-to-play mobile games, as indicated by a recent job listing on the PlayStation careers page. The listing for a Mobile Platform Architect highlights the need for someone to design a platform focused on the development, publication, and management of free-to-play mobile gaming experiences. This initiative comes on the heels of Microsoft’s announcement to introduce an Xbox mobile store in July.

Sony’s Mobile Gaming Aspirations Unveiled in Job Listing

The PlayStation job post, noted by TweakTown, offers insights into Sony’s ambitions within the mobile gaming sector. The listing indicates that PlayStation Studios Mobile is in search of a skilled software engineer who would be responsible for the design and implementation of a mobile gaming platform. The selected candidate would collaborate with internal teams to integrate mobile titles with existing PlayStation services.

Responsibilities outlined in the listing include the architectural design of system components and backend services for the mobile gaming platform, as well as monitoring technical developments that relate to mobile game design.

Additionally, the role calls for experience in designing APIs or similar SDKs, along with proficiency in game engines such as Unity or Unreal Engine.

While Sony has yet to officially unveil its plans for a new mobile gaming platform, there are indications that the company is working to adapt some of its renowned PlayStation titles for mobile formats.

In a presentation from the previous year, Sony reportedly mentioned that several of its internal studios are engaged in mobile game development. The company predicted that mobile gaming will constitute about 5 percent of its game portfolio in 2023, with expectations to increase that share to 10 percent by 2025.

Meanwhile, Microsoft has also been making significant progress in the mobile gaming arena. Last year, the company successfully completed its acquisition of Activision Blizzard King, the firm behind widely played mobile titles such as Candy Crush Saga and Farm Heroes Saga.

This month, Microsoft made headlines again by announcing plans for the debut of its highly anticipated Xbox mobile gaming store in July, which will feature its collection of first-party mobile games, including popular titles like Candy Crush and Minecraft.
