On Thursday, Snapchat unveiled a new artificial intelligence (AI) feature that utilizes its proprietary foundational video models. The innovative tool, referred to as AI video Lenses, merges Augmented Reality (AR) with generative AI to deliver distinctive and engaging video effects for users. At this time, access to these features is exclusive to subscribers of the platform’s premium tier. Initially, users will encounter three new Lenses, with plans for additional offerings to debut on a weekly basis. Like existing Lenses, these new creations can be shared with friends or posted on Stories and Spotlight.
Snapchat Introduces AI Video Lenses
In a recent update on its newsroom website, Snapchat provided details about its latest AI feature. The AI Lenses are driven by the company’s proprietary generative video model, which was first introduced at the Snap Partner Summit in September of last year. Initially, these tools were made available to a select group of creators for testing purposes.
The company is now broadening access to this technology for a larger audience. The new AI video Lenses will be available exclusively to Snapchat Platinum subscribers, the highest subscription tier offered by the platform, priced at Rs. 99 per month. This premium plan provides subscribers with an ad-free experience along with several other exclusive features.
The newly released AI video Lenses include three distinct options. Among them are “Raccoon” and “Fox,” which simulate the presence of these animals within the Snap, creating the illusion that they are moving around the user. The third Lens, named “Spring Flowers,” produces a zoom-out effect that reveals the user in a frame holding a large bouquet of flowers. While only three Lenses are available at launch, Snapchat has committed to rolling out additional options in the upcoming days.
Snapchat Platinum subscribers can easily locate these Lenses at the start of the Lens carousel or by searching for the listed names. To activate the effects, users need to select a Lens and capture a Snap using either the front or rear-facing cameras.
The company noted that users may experience a brief delay while the videos are being fully rendered; however, they can continue using the platform without waiting on a loading screen. Once the video generation process is complete, the AI-enhanced video will be automatically stored in Memories, allowing users to share it with friends or incorporate it into their Stories and Spotlight content.
