Snapchat has initiated the rollout of a new feature for its iOS users, allowing them to track all the locations they’ve visited and where they’ve shared snaps. Named Footsteps, this function operates only when the Ghost Mode option is disabled on Snapchat for iPhones. Besides monitoring new destinations, it also utilizes the user’s stored Memories to account for previous journeys. This announcement follows several key updates from the platform, including the integration of the Gemini large language model (LLM) in My AI and the launch of fifth-generation Snap Spectacles, shared during the Snap Partner Summit 2024 last week.
The Footsteps feature enables iOS users to keep a detailed record of their locations through the Snap Map. Upon first use, it will reference Memories to establish the initial steps, while future uses will employ location data to continuously track the user’s movements.
Initially exclusive to Snapchat+ subscribers, Footsteps has now been made available to all iOS users. Snapchat emphasizes that this information remains private and can only be accessed by the account owner. The feature is only functional when Ghost Mode, which conceals the user’s location from others on the map, is deactivated.
Users have the option to delete their Footsteps history at any time if they choose to discontinue using the feature. Staff members from Gadgets 360 confirmed its availability after updating Snapchat to version 13.9.0.40 on iOS.
Additional Snapchat Features
During the Snap Summit 2024, Snapchat unveiled a partnership with Google to incorporate the Gemini LLM into My AI, its AI chatbot. This integration aims to enhance computer vision capabilities along with text, audio, image, video, and code processing features.
The platform also introduced the Snap AI Video feature, which enables the creation of AI-generated videos from text prompts, currently available exclusively to Creators. Furthermore, Snapchat has launched a new AI Lens that allows users to visualize themselves as older versions of themselves and has added AI Lenses and caption features to Snapchat Memories.
