Snap Inc. announced on Monday the introduction of a new experimental chatbot feature powered by OpenAI’s GPT technology for select users of its Snapchat app. The feature, named My AI, utilizes a customized version of the latest GPT for enhanced interaction within the platform. Initially, this feature will be made available to Snapchat+ subscribers, beginning this week. The company encourages user feedback to refine and enhance the chatbot’s capabilities moving forward.
In a statement posted on their official blog, Snap outlined the rollout of the My AI chatbot, specifically designed using the most recent version of OpenAI’s technology. While the initial launch is exclusive to Snapchat+ subscribers, Snap has not ruled out the possibility of expanding access to all Snapchat users in the future.
Snap has acknowledged that during its early stages, My AI may produce errors, but the company’s goal is to minimize the dissemination of “biased, incorrect, harmful, or misleading information.” Like other conversational AI systems, including Microsoft’s ChatGPT and Google’s Bard, My AI could potentially be manipulated to disclose unintended information.
To enhance the chatbot’s functionality, Snap will be reviewing all conversations that take place through My AI. User feedback will play a critical role in the iterative improvement of the chatbot. Additionally, the company has advised users to refrain from sharing sensitive personal information with the AI.
In related developments, last week Meta disclosed plans to launch a research tool for developing AI-based chatbots and other applications, named LLaMA. This tool is anticipated to be accessible to AI researchers soon, although it is not yet available for use on Meta’s platforms, including WhatsApp and Facebook.
