At the Snap Partner Summit 2024 held on Tuesday, Snapchat introduced the latest iteration of its Spectacles, marking the fifth generation with enhanced augmented reality (AR) features. These new glasses come equipped with micro projectors that offer more immersive AR displays, dual Snapdragon processors for improved performance, and extended battery life compared to their predecessors.

Pricing for Snapchat’s Fifth Generation Spectacles

Currently, Snapchat’s fifth generation Spectacles are not available for general consumer purchase. However, developers can access them through the Spectacles Developer Program, which requires a monthly fee of $99 (approximately Rs. 8,000).

Specifications of Snapchat’s Fifth Generation Spectacles

The new Spectacles feature AR displays utilizing Liquid Crystal on Silicon (LCoS) micro-projectors. These projectors are designed to produce vivid imagery both indoors and outdoors, even in direct sunlight. Operating on Qualcomm dual Snapdragon processors, the device is engineered to optimize computing efficiency while minimizing power consumption and heat generation.

Users can connect the fifth generation Spectacles to their smartphones using the companion app, Spectacles by Snap Inc., available on the App Store. This app enables the setup process, allows control of the glasses, and offers functions such as mirroring the smartphone display, adjusting settings like brightness and volume, and accessing captured content.

According to Snap, these Spectacles offer a runtime of approximately 45 minutes, an improvement over the original model’s 30-minute battery life. Charging is facilitated through USB Type-C, and a cable is included with the purchase. The latest model features subtle design enhancements, appearing slightly bulkier than the fourth generation version.

Running on Snap OS, the new AR Spectacles support various interaction methods, including hand gestures and voice commands. Additionally, Snapchat is collaborating with OpenAI to provide developers with access to multimodal large language models (LLMs) for creating Lenses. They can also utilize the new Lens Studio 5.0 for a streamlined transition of projects to the Spectacles.
