Signal, the widely-used messaging application, enables users to connect additional devices, such as desktops or iPads, to their main Android or iOS smartphones. The company has announced that it will soon implement a feature allowing users to transfer and sync messages and media across these linked devices.
Enhanced Multi-Device Sync for Signal Users on iOS and Android
In a recent blog post, Signal disclosed that users will soon have the ability to transfer and synchronize their messages and media across all linked devices. Presently, users must start from scratch on new devices, such as desktops or iPads, as there is no option to transfer data from the primary account.
The blog emphasizes that users will be able to “bring your chats and your last 45 days of media with you,” and the rollout of this feature is set to occur for Signal users with stable builds “over the next several weeks.” The company confirmed that this functionality will be included in an upcoming beta release.
Users will still have the choice to avoid transferring any data while linking their existing Signal accounts to new devices. This data transfer will include message history, as well as photos, videos, files, stickers, call history, group updates, quotes, reactions, and delivery/read receipts.
Signal also reiterated its commitment to end-to-end encryption, assuring users that message backups will be securely transferred. The process will involve migrating a compressed, encrypted, and archived version of the user’s history to the linked devices via Signal’s servers, as explained in the announcement.
Additionally, Signal recently introduced a Call Links feature, enabling users to initiate group calls with several participants without the need to create a separate group chat. The application has also been updated to include the Raise Hand button and emoji reactions features.
