Signal is introducing a new version of its Windows 11 client that will enable screen security by default, effectively preventing Microsoft’s Recall feature from capturing secured chats. This security measure employs a technology similar to that used by streaming services like Netflix, which restricts users from taking screenshots of content. However, the implementation of such features may pose challenges for individuals who rely on accessibility tools, such as screen readers.
While Signal has made it straightforward to disable this feature through Signal Settings > Privacy > Screen Security, it highlights a broader issue. Developer Joshua Lund emphasized that operating system providers like Microsoft must equip developers of applications like Signal with the necessary resources to prevent OS-level artificial intelligence systems from accessing sensitive data within their platforms.
Despite having postponed the launch of the Recall feature twice before introducing it last month, there is currently no API available for app developers to exclude their users’ sensitive information from its AI-driven archives. While this functionality could facilitate easier searches for emails or messages (including those on Signal) using memorable details about those interactions, it also raises significant concerns regarding privacy and security.
Lund pointed out that Microsoft already has measures in place to prevent private or incognito browser sessions from being tracked, and users with a Copilot Plus PC that features Recall can manage certain app filters within the settings, provided they are aware of how to do so. Currently, Lund stated, “Signal is utilizing the available tools, although we understand there are many valid scenarios where screen capture might be necessary.”
