Signal, the widely-used messaging application, is enhancing its functionality by allowing users to link additional devices such as desktops and iPads to their primary smartphones running Android or iOS. The company has announced that forthcoming updates will enable users to transfer and synchronize messages and media associated with a single account across multiple devices.
Upcoming Multi-Device Synchronisation for Signal Users on iOS and Android
In a recent blog post, Signal disclosed that it will soon introduce a feature allowing users to seamlessly transfer and synchronize their messages and media across all linked devices. Currently, users are required to start fresh on additional devices such as desktops or iPads, as data transfer from the primary account is not possible.
The company’s announcement indicated that users will be able to “bring your chats and your last 45 days of media with you,” with the feature expected to be rolled out to those with stable app builds “over the next several weeks.” Signal confirmed that this capability would be included in an upcoming beta release.
Users will still have the choice to exclude any data transfer when linking their existing Signal accounts to new devices. The transfer will include comprehensive message history, covering photos, videos, files, stickers, call histories, group updates, quotes, reactions, and delivery or read receipts.
Signal emphasized its commitment to security through end-to-end encryption, assuring users that message backups will be transferred securely. The process will involve providing a compressed, encrypted, and archived version of the user’s history to linked devices via Signal’s secure servers.
Recently, Signal also introduced a Call Links feature, enabling users to initiate group calls with multiple participants without having to create separate group chats. Additionally, updates have included a Raise Hand button and new emoji reactions features.
