In a recent communication to staff, Shopify CEO Tobi Lütke emphasized the importance of showcasing the limitations of AI before requesting additional workforce or resources. According to a report by CNBC, Lütke’s message encourages teams to articulate why their goals cannot be met through AI solutions.

The memo, which Lütke shared late last month via X, posed the question, “What would this area look like if autonomous AI agents were already part of the team?” This inquiry, he noted, could potentially spark engaging discussions and innovative projects among team members.

In a broader context, Lütke framed “reflexive AI usage” as a fundamental expectation within the company. He reflected on the rapid integration of AI in the workplace, stating, “AI has been the most rapid shift to how work is done that I’ve seen in my career,” and added that mastering the effective use of AI is a skill that requires significant practice.

Lütke further indicated that effective AI utilization has become a key expectation among all Shopify employees. He also mentioned plans to incorporate AI-related inquiries into the company’s performance and peer review processes.

To thrive in the current environment, he stated, “What we need to succeed is our collective sum total skill and ambition at applying our craft, multiplied by AI, for the benefit of our merchants.”
