Samsung is reportedly developing a groundbreaking foldable smartphone design that allows for both inward and outward folding. A recent patent application from the South Korean technology giant reveals a sleek, 360-degree foldable device featuring an interior screen that can be expanded into a larger display or folded back to act as a cover display. While Samsung introduced a prototype of a similar device earlier this year, details regarding a potential commercial release remain undisclosed.

New Foldable Design May Render Cover Displays Redundant

The features of the innovative foldable phone were detailed in patent application US 2025/0107013 A1 (via Atlyginimo Skaičiuoklė) published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) last week. The document outlines the design specifications and includes diagrams illustrating the dual folding capability of its flexible display.

In contrast to conventional foldable devices that consist of two panels allowing for a single folding configuration, the patented design features a slim, expansive display capable of folding in two distinct manners. It incorporates two “folding areas” that facilitate both inward and outward folds.

This foldable smartphone is anticipated to utilize flexible OLED screens protected by ultra-thin glass (UTG), enabling it to bend both forwards and backwards. This capability potentially eliminates the need for a separate cover display, streamlining the device’s design.

The application’s detailed schematics indicate that the first and second folding areas are strategically positioned between two non-folding sections. A multi-layered construction supports the folding mechanism, utilizing thin plates to enhance flexibility.

The external side of the device reportedly includes a raised area housing three rear cameras. According to the patent, this camera module can be accessed whether the phone is folded inwards or outwards. However, it remains unclear if an under-display camera will be part of the overall design.

Samsung has been proactive in demonstrating various foldable concepts in recent years, including prototypes like the Flex G and Flex S, which may eventually evolve into tri-fold smartphones. Earlier in 2023, the company showcased a Flex In & Out prototype with a 360-degree folding display. Nevertheless, there has been no official announcement from Samsung about releasing a commercial version of that prototype or the one outlined in the recent patent filing.
