Samsung is reportedly working on a new feature for its devices that would adjust the wallpaper based on real-time weather data, following the approval of a recent patent. This innovative function is expected to utilize generative artificial intelligence (AI) to alter the existing wallpaper and overlay relevant user interface (UI) elements, adapting to various weather conditions such as fog, rain, sun, or snow. The patent also indicates that users might receive notifications such as reminders to carry an umbrella during significant weather changes.

Overview of Samsung’s AI-Driven Weather Feature

A patent granted to Samsung Electronics on January 2, filed with the US Patent and Trademark Office, details a method for integrating multiple components — including an original image for the background, a prompt based on the time of day and current weather, context data, and the UI display area. This information is input into a generative AI model, which generates a modified image tailored to the context. The resulting image, along with UI elements, will be presented as the background screen, featuring overlays that reflect the time of day and weather conditions (FIG 6A).

The generative AI model is designed to identify specific areas of the wallpaper where changes can be made according to pre-established prompts. The patent specifies that the model is trained on a curated dataset intended to enhance both the base model and the generative capabilities.

In addition to time and weather-related changes, the feature is also expected to account for seasonal variations (FIG 17).

The patent indicates that the feature may employ an instruction-based approach to transform the original image into a modified version. Additionally, there are plans for functionality that could convert a still image into a video representation using an image-to-video model, allowing users to set the modified image as their home or lock screen wallpaper.
