Capcom has garnered both critical praise and commercial success with its recent remastered editions of iconic Resident Evil titles. A new listing by the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) suggests that the company may be preparing to launch another re-release of an older Resident Evil game. Specifically, Resident Evil 5 has received an ESRB rating for the Xbox Series S/X, indicating that an updated version for current-generation consoles may be in development.
Resident Evil 5 Rated for Xbox Series S/X
As reported by VGC, the ESRB has classified Resident Evil 5 for Xbox Series S/X platforms. The rating designates the game as ‘M’ for Mature, due to its content featuring “Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Strong Language.”
While Capcom has yet to officially announce a re-release for Resident Evil 5 on Xbox Series S/X and PS5, the new ESRB rating indicates the possibility of a remastered version for contemporary consoles.
This latest classification follows the rating of Resident Evil 6 for Xbox Series S/X in January. The consecutive listings for both Resident Evil 6 and Resident Evil 5 imply that Capcom is planning to bring these titles to current-generation gaming systems.
Originally launched on PS3 and Xbox 360 in 2009, Resident Evil 5 was made available on PS4 and Xbox One in 2016, and subsequently on Nintendo Switch in 2019. In contrast, Resident Evil 6 debuted on PS3 and Xbox 360 in 2012, saw a remaster for PS4 and Xbox One in 2016, and was also released on the Switch in 2019. It appears both titles could receive native ports for PS5 and Xbox Series S/X, likely featuring graphical enhancements.
In addition to these remastered versions, Capcom has confirmed that the next major release in the Resident Evil series, which will likely be titled Resident Evil 9, is currently under development. Koshi Nakanishi, the director of Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, is at the helm of this upcoming installment in the survival-horror franchise.
During the Capcom Next showcase in July of last year, Nakanishi stated, “We’re making a new Resident Evil. It was really difficult to figure out what to do after 7. But I found it, and to be honest it feels substantial.”
The last mainline title in the series, Resident Evil Village, was released in 2021.
