On Monday, Reddit announced an expansion of its automatic translation feature, building on the machine learning system that was first introduced in September 2024. This innovative tool facilitates the translation of posts and comments into users’ preferred languages and was initially launched in 35 countries, supporting multiple languages. As part of the latest update, Reddit will now enable translations for Hindi, with plans to introduce support for Bengali in the near future.
Reddit Plans Future Support for Bengali Translations
In an update on its blog, Reddit highlighted the addition of Hindi support, referring to it as “one of India’s most spoken languages.” The company affirmed that Bengali support would follow shortly.
Users in over 35 countries can access posts and comments in their chosen languages by selecting the translate icon located in the overflow menu at the top right corner of the mobile apps or the website. This option enables an automatic translation of the entire Reddit feed according to individual language preferences.
Beyond simply reading content in their local languages, users are also able to create new posts and comments using their preferred language. When the machine learning feature is activated, these submissions are automatically translated into the native language of the respective Subreddit or community. A notification banner is displayed to inform others that the post was generated using the translation tool.
Moreover, Reddit has announced enhancements to its search functionality, allowing users to discover relevant content even when searching in their preferred language. However, it is important to note that Reddit’s Answers chatbot is currently limited to English only.
Last week, Reddit introduced its AI chatbot in India; the feature is still in beta testing. This chatbot is designed to respond to inquiries, synthesize discussions, and summarize existing posts and comments from across Reddit’s diverse communities. The chatbot relies solely on the discussions available on the platform, allowing users to make natural language inquiries for information, opinions, and recommendations.
