Reddit is set to enhance its automatic translation capabilities starting Monday. The social media platform, known for its discussion forum format, initially introduced a machine learning (ML) translation feature in September 2024 to facilitate communication in users’ preferred languages. This feature was initially made available in 35 countries, covering various languages. The latest update includes support for Hindi, with plans to add Bengali in the near future.
Expansion to Include Support for Bengali
In a recent update to its official blog, Reddit announced the inclusion of Hindi, recognizing it as one of the most widely spoken languages in India. The company has also indicated that Bengali support will be introduced shortly thereafter.
Users in over 35 countries can now easily read posts and comments in their chosen language by selecting the translate icon located in the overflow menu on the top right corner of both the mobile app and the website. This option automatically translates users’ entire Reddit feed into their selected language.
Beyond reading translated content, users can also create new posts and comments using their local languages. Once the ML feature is enabled, these contributions are automatically translated into the native language of the subreddit or community. A banner will appear, notifying users that the content has been translated via the tool.
Furthermore, Reddit is enhancing its search functionality to ensure users can discover pertinent content even when they conduct searches in their preferred languages. However, it is noteworthy that the company’s Answers chatbot currently only supports English.
Last week, Reddit introduced its AI chatbot in India. Currently in beta, the chatbot can address user inquiries, synthesize, and summarize existing discussions across Reddit communities. The chatbot draws from the platform’s content, allowing users to pose questions in natural language and receive relevant information, viewpoints, and recommendations.
