Sony has reportedly increased the price of the PS5 in India, following recent price hikes in the UK, Europe, and other markets. This adjustment applies specifically to the PS5 digital edition, echoing similar changes made in previous months in other regions. The price for the disc edition of the console remains unaffected.
Increase in PS5 Digital Edition Price
The PS5 digital edition slim now retails for Rs. 49,990, an increase of Rs. 5,000 from its previous price of Rs. 44,990, according to updates on Sony’s Shop at SC website (noted by High Chaos Run). Interestingly, the Fortnite bundle of the PS5 digital edition continues to sell at the original price of Rs. 44,990.
The standard PS5, equipped with a disc drive, retains its price at Rs. 54,990. Additionally, prices for accessories such as DualSense controllers and Pulse 3D wireless headsets have not been increased.
Currently, third-party listings for the PS5 digital edition on platforms like Amazon and Flipkart have not yet reflected this price increase. Although Sony has not formally announced the adjustment in India, inquiries have been made to PlayStation India for further clarification.
This price increase aligns with the adjustments made by Sony in April across several key markets including the UK, Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA), Australia, and New Zealand. At that time, the company cited a “challenging economic environment” as a factor for the price hikes, which were again limited to the digital edition in those regions.
In its quarterly earnings call in May, Sony’s parent company reported a decline in PS5 sales, with 18.5 million units sold in FY 2024, down from the 20.8 million in the previous year. The uncertain economic climate and newly imposed tariffs were highlighted as contributing factors behind the decision for multiple manufacturers to raise prices.
In a related move, Microsoft announced price increases for its Xbox Series S/X consoles and accessories in May, adding that select first-party games would be priced at $80 starting this holiday season. Microsoft acknowledged the challenges posed by these changes, emphasizing careful consideration given to prevailing market conditions and the rising costs of development.
