The Ray-Ban Meta AI Glasses have introduced a notable feature: an LED light that indicates when the device’s 12-megapixel camera is recording. This design aims to ensure transparency by signaling to individuals in front of the wearer that they are being filmed. However, a car customization firm known for its vehicle wraps is now allegedly offering vinyl covers that can obscure or reduce the visibility of this LED indicator. Previous attempts by various individuals to bypass this privacy feature have largely been unsuccessful. Reports indicate that these vinyl covers are being marketed on TikTok, although they reportedly do not function effectively.
A report from Wired highlights that this car customization company is selling a product referred to as the “Luxe GhostDots 4 Meta Glasses,” designed specifically for the Ray-Ban Meta Glasses. These vinyl covers purport to block or dim the “bright white” recording light integrated into the smart glasses. To date, the company has reportedly sold over 500 sets of these “Ghost Dots” through the social media platform. Each package contains 20 vinyl dots and is priced at approximately $15 (around Rs. 1,315).
However, the report suggests that the effectiveness of these vinyl dots is questionable. According to the seller, an instructional video has been provided, detailing how to apply the translucent dots directly onto the camera lens. Nonetheless, it appears that the smart glasses are programmed to detect when the LED recording indicator is obstructed, resulting in a suspension of video recording.
Since their launch in India on May 13, the Ray-Ban Meta Glasses have garnered attention for their advanced features, including a 12-megapixel camera capable of capturing vertical videos and high-resolution images. Users can take photos at a resolution of 3,024×4,032 pixels and record videos in 1080p for up to 60 seconds. The glasses, powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon AR1 Gen 1 SoC, boast 32GB of internal storage and come complete with a range of AI-powered functionalities, along with music playback capabilities.
