In a significant announcement, Sony has revealed plans to introduce support for VR games on PC for its PlayStation VR2 headset later this year. On Wednesday, the company disclosed that it is currently in the testing phase for enabling PS VR2 to access PC VR games, expanding upon its existing lineup available on the PS5. The PS VR2 made its international debut in February 2023 and was launched in India in December. However, the headset is exclusively compatible with the PS5 and does not support content from the prior generation’s VR headset.
This information was shared via the official PlayStation blog, which also included news about various upcoming titles for the PS VR2 platform. The blog stated, “We’re pleased to share that we are currently testing the ability for PS VR2 players to access additional games on PC to offer even more game variety in addition to the PS VR2 titles available through PS5.” The company mentioned plans to roll out this support in 2024 and promised further updates in due course.
While a specific launch date for PC VR game support has not yet been set, this development is expected to broaden the currently limited PS VR2 game library. Additional details concerning compatibility, platforms, and performance remain to be confirmed. For instance, it is still unclear whether PS VR2 users will be able to download PC VR games directly through platforms like SteamVR. These specifics will likely emerge with time. Since its launch on February 22, 2023, the PS VR2 has featured over 40 titles in its library, with more titles, including Resident Evil 4 VR, added throughout the year.
In addition to the announcements regarding PC support, PlayStation unveiled a new title for the PS VR2, titled The Wizards – Dark Times: Brotherhood. This action-adventure game immerses players in the role of a wizard, allowing them to cast spells using hand gestures. The game offers solo play and a cooperative mode for up to three players and is now available on the PlayStation Store for PS VR2 users.
The blog also announced new release dates, downloadable content, and details for additional VR titles on the platform. Notably, Wanderer: The Fragments of Fate, an action VR game from Mighty Eyes, showcased a new gameplay trailer and is set for release on June 27. Meanwhile, Little Cities Bigger, a city-building game by Purple Yonder, has been scheduled for launch on March 12 on PS VR2.
Furthermore, the popular Sniper Elite spinoff, Zombie Army series, is poised to launch its VR iteration on PS VR2 this year. Arizona Sunshine 2, on the other hand, is rolling out free updates, including an in-game Corgi companion and three new maps for Horde mode. Players can access the Corgi companion now, while the new multiplayer maps are set to be released one per month, starting in March.
Finally, the blog introduced new screenshots and core mechanics for Soul Covenant, an upcoming narrative action JRPG from Thirdverse, which is anticipated to launch sometime in 2024.
Sony’s recent VR updates follow the reveal of two new titles, Metro Awakening and Legendary Tales, for PS VR2 during last month’s State of Play showcase. Metro Awakening is a story-driven first-person VR title from the well-known Metro series, expected to debut on PS VR2 this year. Conversely, Legendary Tales is a VR action-RPG developed by Urban Wolf Games, which was launched on February 8.
