Sony appears poised to unveil an upgraded version of its PS5 DualSense controller, according to a recently spotted listing on Best Buy Canada, which has since been removed. Dubbed the V2 PlayStation gamepad, the controller promises an impressive battery life of 12 hours at maximum charge, a notable enhancement compared to the current model, which typically lasts between 7 to 8 hours depending on the game being played. The listing priced the new controller at CAD 89.99 (approximately Rs. 5,580) and also indicated that a convenient click-in charging station would be included in the package, allowing users to play for extended periods without hassle.
In terms of design, the DualSense V2 controller closely resembles its predecessor, featuring a 3.5mm headphone jack, an integrated microphone, and the same set of motors for haptic feedback and adaptive triggers aimed at enhancing player immersion. The controller maintains the same weight of 280 grams. As an incremental update, it is not expected to include customizable back buttons or swappable thumbsticks like those found in the more premium DualSense Edge series. It remains unclear whether the Best Buy listing provided a comprehensive overview of the specifications or if Sony has set a release date for the new controller.
During its CES 2024 presentation, Sony did not mention the DualSense V2 controller, opting instead to showcase new color variations for the PS5 — blue, silver, and red — which feature a metallic sheen. Although not explicitly stated, these side plates are expected to be sold separately in the future. Additionally, Sony showcased innovative uses of the PS5 DualSense controller, including its ability to remotely operate the Afeela, a new electric vehicle developed in collaboration with Honda, noted for its expansive panoramic screen across the front console.
In November, reports indicated that Sony filed a patent for a redesigned DualSense controller that would utilize AI technology to learn player behaviors, potentially illuminating buttons and triggers when players are stuck on puzzles. The patent also suggests the use of the PS5 controller’s touchpad as an additional screen to visually display game hints. While the existence of a patent does not guarantee implementation, it reflects Sony’s commitment to differentiate its products in the gaming landscape.
This week, PlayStation announced its upcoming offerings for the PS Plus Extra and Deluxe/Premium subscribers, featuring a lineup of free games that includes the highly regarded Resident Evil 2 remake, Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands, and Just Cause 3, among others. It’s worth noting that the company increased the prices for its annual PS Plus memberships last year.
