Perplexity has made its AI-enabled browser, dubbed Comet, widely accessible and free for all users. Initially launched this summer for subscribers at a premium price of $200 per month, the company is now promoting Comet as a potential alternative to Google Chrome, claiming that “the internet is better on Comet.”

At its core, Comet integrates advanced AI to enhance the web browsing experience. The browser combines Perplexity’s AI search capabilities with a responsive personal AI assistant, which the company emphasizes assists users in real-time, rather than serving as an add-on to traditional browsers. Users can expect improved efficiency in completing everyday tasks such as online shopping, trip planning, and managing other personal errands.

The premium features of Comet were initially limited to users subscribed to the $200 monthly Perplexity Max plan, with extensions to select users on the less expensive Pro plan and a growing waitlist of millions. The recent shift means that users can now access Comet without any subscription fees.

In addition, Perplexity has announced the launch of Comet Plus, a subscription service designed to provide curated news content. CEO Aravind Srinivas has compared this offering to Apple News Plus, and it has garnered partnerships with several prestigious media organizations, which include:

  • CNN
  • Conde Nast
  • Fortune
  • Le Figaro
  • Le Monde
  • The Los Angeles Times
  • The Washington Post

Users subscribed to the Perplexity Pro and Max plans will have access to Comet Plus included in their subscription, while others can access it for $5 per month.

Perplexity joins a competitive landscape where other tech giants are also integrating AI into their browsing platforms. Notable examples include Google’s incorporation of Gemini into Chrome, Arch’s development of the Arc browser with its AI feature, Dia, as well as Opera’s recent launch of its own AI browser, Neon.

Correction, October 2nd: This article has been updated for accuracy regarding the pricing of Comet Plus, which is now available as part of Pro/Max plans or for a fee of $5 per month for other users.
