On Thursday, Perplexity Labs, a new artificial intelligence (AI) feature within the Perplexity platform, was unveiled. According to the company, this innovative mode can transform text prompts into fully developed projects, including reports, spreadsheets, and even basic web applications. Utilizing deep web browsing and code execution, Perplexity Labs is capable of handling complex tasks that exceeded the previous functions of the platform. This announcement follows the recent launch of the Perplexity Assistant for iOS, which took place just a month earlier.

Perplexity Labs is described as an advanced iteration of Deep Research, and it is currently accessible to all subscribers of Perplexity Pro. This enhanced feature produces detailed answers to intricate questions that usually necessitate multiple searches. By utilizing various specialized tools and investing more time in the task, the new mode can execute commands and generate both documents and web applications.

As indicated by the company, Perplexity Labs can perform deep web browsing, execute code, create charts, and generate images. However, the specifics regarding whether these functions are agentic tools or if the feature supports a multi-agent workflow remain unclear. Additionally, the company has not disclosed if separate large language models (LLMs) are responsible for features such as image generation and code execution.
The platform is capable of writing and executing code to carry out tasks like structuring data, applying formulas, and creating both charts and documents. All output, including documents, code files, charts, and images, is organized into a distinct Assets tab, where users can view and download their creations. An App tab is also available, allowing users to develop basic dashboards, slideshows, and websites.
Descriptions of the new feature suggest it possesses an agentic quality. The company indicates that it may take 10 minutes or longer to complete “self-supervised” tasks. While users can observe the chain-of-thought (CoT) process, it is currently unknown if they can pause or reroute the AI to adjust the initial prompt or shift the final outcome.
Perplexity Labs has been showcased through examples of tasks it can execute, including devising a trading strategy for a specific stock or event, conceptualizing a genre-blended film complete with a visual storyboard and script, creating corporate profiles, and producing comparative data visualizations.
