Collaborations featuring fictional characters are set to arrive on Sora, according to the latest announcements from OpenAI. The company aims to clamp down on the unauthorized spread of inappropriate content linked to characters, including those involving themes of crime and violence, which have frequently surfaced on the platform since its inception.

Bill Peebles, who leads the Sora team at OpenAI, indicated that the integration of character cameos in videos is part of the future plans, with specific details anticipated to be revealed soon, marking a legitimate means for incorporating copyrighted characters into user-generated content.

The announcement aligns with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman’s recent shift from an opt-out model concerning copyright, which the company had been using for video generation. He noted that copyright holders are “very excited” about the potential for this new type of interactive storytelling and assured them they would receive “more granular control” akin to the current opt-in model employed for likeness use, enhanced with additional controls.

Additionally, Altman stated that a revenue-sharing model for the rightsholders whose characters are utilized will be implemented “very soon,” though he cautioned that determining the specific payment structure might require experimentation to optimize.
