Reports indicate that OpenAI’s development of GPT-5 is encountering significant delays. The company is facing multiple challenges in advancing its next-generation AI model beyond GPT-4, including a scarcity of training data and substantial funding requirements. The project has reportedly been underway for over 18 months, extending well past the timeline originally envisioned by the firm. The release date for the large language model (LLM) remains uncertain.

OpenAI’s GPT-5 Development Reportedly Hits Roadblocks

The Wall Street Journal has indicated that the GPT-5 initiative, codenamed Orion, is running behind its planned schedule, with no clear indication of when it may be operational. Sources familiar with the project have stated that OpenAI is navigating two primary challenges: the escalating costs of development and the insufficiency of training data necessary to enhance the model’s intelligence.

As outlined in the report, OpenAI has undertaken two major training phases for GPT-5, each lasting several months and utilizing substantial amounts of data. However, the company has reportedly encountered unforeseen complications during both training sessions, which hindered the attainment of the anticipated outcomes. Remarkably, the expense for a single six-month training period has been pegged at approximately $500 million (around ₹4,260 crores).

At this stage, GPT-5 is described as only slightly more advanced than OpenAI’s current AI models. However, insiders reportedly claim it lacks the sophistication needed to offer significant value to users and businesses, rendering it unlikely to generate profit considering the high operational costs.

Given the current circumstances, OpenAI may need to conduct several additional training sessions to elevate the AI model to the requisite level of intelligence. If the firm continues to grapple with data limitations, it could further postpone the model’s development. This situation has reportedly caused discontent among OpenAI’s principal investor, Microsoft, which had expected GPT-5 to be launched by mid-2024.
