OpenAI is actively working to demonstrate the capabilities of generative artificial intelligence in the film industry. The company is supporting the production of an animated feature titled Critterz, aiming for it to compete with larger-budget films, as reported by the Wall Street Journal.
The anticipated release of Critterz is scheduled for 2026, with plans for a premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. The film will primarily utilize OpenAI’s AI technologies, including GPT-5, which recently faced criticism upon its release last month.
Created with a budget under $30 million and produced within a nine-month timeframe, Critterz represents a fraction of the cost typically associated with animated films. OpenAI is collaborating with Native Foreign and Vertigo Films, companies based in Los Angeles and London. The goal is to persuade cautious Hollywood decision-makers to invest in AI-driven projects amid ongoing hesitance due to slow adoption rates, resistance from creative professionals, and concerns regarding intellectual property rights.
