OpenAI has introduced its latest artificial intelligence model, designated as o3-pro, on Tuesday. Marketed as the company’s most sophisticated reasoning model, o3-pro is currently accessible exclusively to subscribers of the premium tier. Users can interact with this model through both ChatGPT and the AI company’s application programming interface (API). Compared to its predecessor, the o3 model, the o3-pro is touted to excel in various fields, including science, education, programming, data analysis, and writing. This launch follows closely on the heels of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman’s announcement of an 80 percent discount on input and output prices related to the o3 model.
OpenAI Releases o3-pro For ChatGPT Pro Subscribers
In a recent tweet on X, formerly known as Twitter, OpenAI’s official account confirmed the deployment of the o3-pro model. Currently, it is available to ChatGPT Pro subscribers and developers through an API, with access extending to enterprise and educational users a week later.
The new o3-pro model will replace the existing o1-pro in the selection options available to Pro subscribers. This introduction comes nearly two months after the San Francisco-based company launched the foundational o3 and o4-mini models.
According to OpenAI, the latest version significantly surpasses the non-pro variant across several categories. In internal assessments involving human testers, o3-pro achieved a personal writing win rate of 66.7 percent compared to the o3 model and recorded a 62.7 percent win rate in computer programming against the baseline model. However, the company has not released comparative benchmark tests against competitors like Gemini 2.5 Pro or Claude Opus 4.
The o3-pro model also features the capability to utilize various tools. It can perform tasks such as web searching, file analysis, and computer vision with reasoning. Additionally, it supports Python and can access memory for personalized responses. Nevertheless, OpenAI indicated that the use of these tools results in slightly longer response times compared to o1-pro. Therefore, users are encouraged to select o3-pro when prioritizing the accuracy of responses over speed.
However, there are some limitations associated with the o3-pro AI model. OpenAI has stated that it cannot generate images and does not support temporary chats or the Canvas feature. The restriction on temporary chats is due to a technical issue, which the company hopes to resolve soon.
