OpenAI announced on Friday that it is in the process of testing new reasoning AI models, named o3 and o3 mini, marking a significant step in the competitive landscape against companies like Google striving to develop more advanced problem-solving models.
CEO Sam Altman indicated that the AI company aims to release o3 mini by the end of January, followed by the full version of o3 shortly thereafter. These advanced large language models have the potential to surpass existing models, thereby enticing new users and attracting additional investments.
In September, Microsoft-backed OpenAI launched its o1 AI models, which focus on extensively processing queries to address complex challenges.
The o1 models are designed to reason through intricate tasks, enabling them to tackle more demanding issues in fields such as science, coding, and mathematics, according to a blog post by the company.
OpenAI has stated that its new o3 and o3 mini models, currently undergoing internal safety assessments, will be more potent than the previously introduced o1 models.
The organization is also opening an application process for external researchers to evaluate the o3 models prior to their public launch, with submissions closing on January 10.
OpenAI ignited an AI race when it introduced ChatGPT in November 2022. The surge in the company’s popularity and the introduction of new products facilitated a $6.6 billion funding round in October.
In a parallel move, Google’s parent company, Alphabet, released the second generation of its Gemini AI model earlier this December, as it seeks to regain a leading position in the AI technology arena.
