OpenAI has introduced a new study mode for ChatGPT, designed to facilitate a step-by-step approach to problem-solving rather than simply providing answers. This feature is now available for users of ChatGPT Free, Plus, Pro, and Team, while ChatGPT Edu users will gain access in the coming weeks.
With study mode activated, users can expect interactive prompts that employ techniques such as Socratic questioning, hints, and self-reflection prompts. OpenAI adds that responses in this mode will be structured in clear sections, emphasizing key connections between topics and personalizing lessons based on assessments of users’ skill levels and previous inquiries. This mode also includes the option to take quizzes.
As competition among AI companies intensifies, OpenAI and its rivals are targeting the college student demographic. For example, Anthropic launched a “Learning mode” feature for its Claude AI in April. While features like study mode may promote learning, users have the choice to disable it, raising the need for self-motivation to utilize the educational resources effectively instead of using ChatGPT merely for quick answers or even academic dishonesty. Currently, OpenAI does not provide mechanisms for parents or educators to enforce the use of study mode, as highlighted by Leah Belsky, VP of Education at OpenAI.
The study mode features are based on “custom system instructions” developed with input from educators, scientists, and pedagogy specialists. OpenAI has opted for customizable instructions to facilitate rapid learning from student feedback, even if this leads to occasional inconsistencies in the AI’s behavior. Looking ahead, OpenAI intends to enhance the experience with improved visualizations, goal-setting capabilities, and greater personalization.
In related developments, Google announced enhancements to some of its AI tools for educational purposes. The AI Mode in Search has introduced a new canvas mode to help users create study guides, while NotebookLM’s Video Overviews feature now generates slideshows enhanced with AI-generated narration.
