OpenAI has introduced a group of advisors for its newly established nonprofit commission, including notable figures Dolores Huerta, Monica Lozano, Dr. Robert K. Ross, and Jack Oliver. This initiative aims to enhance OpenAI’s philanthropic activities, as stated in an announcement made on Tuesday.
Dolores Huerta is well-known for her significant contributions as a labor activist in the 20th century. Monica Lozano previously served as the president and CEO of the College Futures Foundation and is currently a member of Apple’s board of directors. Dr. Robert K. Ross has a background as president and CEO of The California Endowment, while OpenAI describes Jack Oliver as a prominent figure in government, technology, business, and advocacy.
The appointments come following OpenAI’s announcement earlier this year regarding its transition to a for-profit model. This shift has faced opposition from some former employees, who supported an amicus brief in favor of Elon Musk’s lawsuit against the organization, claiming it has strayed from its core mission of serving humanity. Additionally, a coalition encompassing nonprofit, labor, and philanthropic leaders has called on California Attorney General Rob Bonta to investigate OpenAI’s shift to a profit-driven company.
In their statement, OpenAI emphasized, “The nonprofit arm of OpenAI remains a priority, and this commission will play a vital role in broadening its influence and effectiveness.” They further elaborated that the commission aims to ensure that the nonprofit acts as a catalyst for communities and mission-driven organizations addressing pressing global issues, particularly in the realms of health, education, public service, and scientific research.
