OpenAI and Meta are in discussions regarding a potential artificial intelligence (AI) partnership with Reliance Industries, a major Indian conglomerate led by Mukesh Ambani. According to reports, the San Francisco-based AI company and the Menlo Park-based social media firm aim to broaden their AI presence in India by leveraging Reliance’s extensive consumer and enterprise market.
The collaboration may involve the distribution of OpenAI’s AI platform through Reliance Jio, the telecom branch of Reliance Industries. Meanwhile, Reliance is exploring the feasibility of running Llama models locally with support from Meta.
Reports from The Information indicate that both OpenAI and Meta have initiated separate conversations with Reliance Industries recently. Sources familiar with the situation noted that the discussions have centered on enhancing AI offerings within the Indian market.
A specific partnership under consideration involves the distribution of ChatGPT via Reliance Jio. While details are still emerging, this potential deal could allow Jio to offer ChatGPT Plus subscriptions to its users at reduced rates.
In addition to the Jio collaboration, OpenAI is contemplating lowering its subscription fees for ChatGPT by “several dollars.” This reduction reportedly pertains to the Plus subscription, which is currently priced at Rs. 1,950 in India, while the Pro and Team subscriptions would remain unaffected. However, it remains unclear whether this pricing strategy was part of the discussions with Reliance.
Reliance is also exploring the possibility of providing OpenAI’s models to its enterprise clients through an application programming interface (API). The conglomerate aims to host and operate these AI models locally, ensuring that local customer data is retained within India.
Moreover, Reliance has been in talks regarding the deployment of OpenAI and Meta’s AI models in its ambitious three-gigawatt data center planned for Jamnagar, Gujarat. Once completed, this facility is expected to be the largest data center in the world by capacity.
Notably, Jio Platforms Limited (JPL), in collaboration with AMD, Cisco, and Nokia, announced the launch of the Open Telecom AI Platform at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2025. This initiative aims to co-develop and commercialize practical AI solutions tailored to the telecommunications sector.
