On Monday, OpenAI announced the widespread availability of its new search engine-based feature, ChatGPT Search, to all registered users. This functionality allows users to obtain answers to their questions using contextual information derived from various websites and blogs. Initially revealed in July with a prototype called SearchGPT, the feature was first made available to a limited group of testers, followed by an introduction for paid subscribers in November. Now, users on the free tier can also access this feature.
OpenAI’s ChatGPT Search Now Accessible to All Users
As part of a 12-day rollout of new features, OpenAI expanded ChatGPT Search to all users on the eighth day of this schedule. This new web search capability can be accessed directly within the chatbot’s interface and is designed to be activated both manually and automatically. To enhance user experience, OpenAI developed its own search engine to limit dependence on third-party platforms and address web crawling challenges.
For users accessing ChatGPT via web or mobile applications, a new globe icon will appear next to the ‘Attach file’ button in the text field. Clicking this icon engages the web search mode, enabling the AI to retrieve data solely from the internet instead of relying on its internal knowledge base. OpenAI also indicated that while users can turn on this feature manually, it will automatically activate for pertinent inquiries.
ChatGPT Search is capable of reviewing multiple websites in response to a query and synthesizes the information to provide a coherent answer in natural language. Additionally, the feature identifies sources in two ways: an icon appears after each sentence where sourced information is utilized, and a comprehensive list of sources is presented at the bottom of the response.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), OpenAI’s official account announced that users of ChatGPT Plus, Team, and Pro would also gain access to Search with Advanced Voice mode, which is set to be introduced within the coming week.
Furthermore, OpenAI shared that maps will be integrated into ChatGPT mobile applications, allowing users to search and discuss local restaurants, businesses, and attractions. The company has assured that the information shown on the maps will remain current and accurate.
