On Tuesday, OpenAI announced the launch of ChatGPT Gov, a new iteration of its chatbot designed specifically for United States government agencies. This self-hosted platform enables these agencies to utilize the AI within their own internal cloud environments. The San Francisco-based tech company emphasized that this version will comply with all relevant privacy, security, and regulatory standards required by the federal government. This announcement coincides with OpenAI’s recent unveiling of The Stargate Project, an initiative developed in collaboration with technology partners and equity investors aimed at expanding its AI infrastructure across the nation.

In a blog post, OpenAI outlined the capabilities of this new chatbot version. ChatGPT Gov operates as a standalone platform that can function without a constant connection to OpenAI’s servers, being hosted on secure internal cloud servers. This design ensures that any sensitive or classified information processed by the AI remains confidential and is not stored indefinitely.

OpenAI stated that the choice to provide this technology to government agencies was motivated by a commitment to national interests and public welfare, aiming to support policymakers in delivering enhanced services. The company expressed optimism that ChatGPT Gov would facilitate quicker internal approvals for the use of OpenAI’s tools in managing sensitive non-public data.

Government agencies will have the option to deploy ChatGPT Gov either in their Microsoft Azure commercial cloud or the Azure Government cloud, utilizing Microsoft Azure’s OpenAI Service. This platform will feature functionalities equivalent to those found in the ChatGPT Enterprise version, operating on the GPT-4o AI model.

With the capabilities of ChatGPT Gov, agencies can engage in tasks including text interpretation, summarization, coding, image analysis, and beyond. The self-hosting nature of the platform will also enable users to save and share conversations, upload text and image files, and develop custom GPT applications.

To enhance security, OpenAI will supply an administrative console for IT teams and Chief Information Officers (CIOs). Administrators will hold the authority to manage users, groups, custom GPTs, single sign-on (SSO) capabilities, and other features. Furthermore, the use of ChatGPT Gov will adhere to OpenAI’s established usage policies.
