On Tuesday, OpenAI launched ChatGPT Gov, a new iteration of its chatbot designed specifically for US Government agencies. This self-hosting platform allows agencies to deploy the tool within their internal cloud environments. The San Francisco-based AI company emphasized that ChatGPT Gov will meet all privacy, security, and compliance standards required by the US Government. Additionally, OpenAI recently unveiled The Stargate Project, in collaboration with technology partners and equity investors, aimed at enhancing its AI infrastructure throughout the United States.
OpenAI Launches ChatGPT Gov
In a blog post, OpenAI elaborated on the features and capabilities of ChatGPT Gov. This new version operates independently, not requiring a connection to OpenAI’s servers, and can be securely hosted on internal cloud servers. This setup ensures that classified and sensitive information entered into the AI remains inaccessible to individuals outside the agency and is not retained indefinitely.
The decision to offer this product to the US Government was made with consideration for national interests and the betterment of public services. OpenAI believes that ChatGPT Gov will facilitate the prompt authorization of its tools for managing sensitive non-public data among policymakers.
ChatGPT Gov can be integrated into agencies’ Microsoft Azure commercial cloud or Azure Government cloud, utilizing the OpenAI Service provided by Microsoft. It offers capabilities comparable to the ChatGPT Enterprise version and is powered by the GPT-4o AI model.
Government agencies can leverage ChatGPT Gov for tasks such as text interpretation, summarization, coding, and image analysis. The self-hosting nature of the platform also enables users to save and share conversations within their workspace, upload text and image files, and create custom GPTs tailored to their needs.
For enhanced security, OpenAI will provide an administrative console for IT teams and Chief Information Officers (CIOs). Those granted administrative privileges will have the capability to manage users, oversee groups, configure custom GPTs, and implement single sign-on (SSO) features. OpenAI noted that the utilization of ChatGPT Gov will adhere to its established usage policies.
